2010-11 RECORD: 4-4/7th in Firelands Conference
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS: Scotty Tackett, jr., 8-24, 120; Zach Ruch, jr., 12-24, 126; Ty Schrader, sr., 2x DQ, 132; Jarrod Donnersbach, jr., DQ, 138; Josh Schrader, sr., 145; Zac Arnold, jr., 17-22, 160; Logan Horn, jr., Firelands Conference champ, DQ, 170; Chris Parsons, sr., 182; Zach Channell, 182; Austin Hughes, sr., DQ, 220.
OTHER PROSPECTS: Tyler King, fr., 113; Josh Endicott, 132; Kaden Sparkman, 138; Cal Redden, 138; Robert Richman, fr., 145; Dale Laser, 145; Chance Butcher, fr., 152; Christian Loera, fr., 160; Jordan Downs, soph., 170/182; Nick Milgrim, sr., 285; Brandon Smith, fr., 285.
COACHES COMMENT: This year is going to be a special year at Plymouth. We have 24 kids on the roster and this will be the first year we are able to have some J.V. matches and some depth. Overall we are going to fill 13 or 14 weight classes. It is hard to find that elusive 106. I am looking forward to seeing how the new weight classes will pan out. Right now there seems to be some people who are not happy, but that will come in time. We have some talent returning and some young kids that are going to push for starting spots. Some of our kids who started last year will not even be in the starting line up this year.
Overall I feel we can compete for the top of the conference. Right now I feel Western Reserve is the team to beat and we can’t count out Crestview since they have been at the top for numerous years. I feel with our depth we can challenge for the top of conference like we did in football. This is going to be an exciting year. We have a lot of blue collar kids who like to work hard and they won’t settle until they reach their goals.

SOUTH CENTRAL
HEAD COACH: Ken Johnson (11th year)
2010-11 RECORD/CONFERENCE FINISH: Not available/5th in Firelands Conference
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS: Alex Knoll, soph.,12-21, 135/140/145; Caleb Barnett, jr., 35-13, DQ, 130/135; Cory Coder jr. 14-29119; Joe Gavarrette, jr., 9-21, DQ, 103; Shawn Hale, jr., 14-21, 152; Randy West, jr., 8-20, 135/140; Dylan Blanton, sr., 38-16, DQ, FC Champ, 125/130.
TOP PROSPECTS: Jacob Creveling, sr.; Nebraska Puckett, soph.; Marcus Obermiller, soph.; Michael Jennings, fr., 160/170; Brett Hoag, fr.
COACH ON TEAM STRENGTHS: We have 7 returning letter winners from last season, 2 coming back with winning records or post season experience. Three are District Qualifiers from last year (Caleb Barnett -2x, Joe Gavarrette-2x, Dylan Blanton). Both Caleb Barnett and Dylan Blanton went 2-2 at Districts last year and each should have very exciting seasons this year. I would not count Joe Gavarrette out of the mix. He is a Junior this year and he has finally grown into the 106 weight class. Our other retuning lettermen will be more competitive as well, and we expect to see some great things coming from them.
Our new Freshmen and first year wrestlers will add to the strength of this team as well. They have good athletic ability and a great willingness to learn. As always, if we can stay healthy, and these young athletes improve over the course of the season like they do each year, we should have a very productive and exciting season.
COACH ON TEAM WEAKNESSES: We may be shy of having a full team even though we have 12 wrestlers on the roster. It will be quite a challenge to have a shot at being conference champs with Crestview and their returning State competitors, as well as Western Reserve and the experience they bring back into the league. We also need to watch out for Mapleton who have bigger numbers and a couple of quality wrestlers in their line up. Nevertheless, I am always impressed by the way our guys step up to the challenge!

OTHER PROSPECTS: Wes Buettner, fr.; Jackson Donley, fr.; Alex Hauenhorst, fr.; Christian "Gunnar" Lucius, fr.; Justin Siefker, fr.
COACHES COMMENTS: This season I believe our strengths are our senior leadership and our upperclassman in general. We should be very strong from our feet and solid on top. Going into this season we are looking to have our first full team in about 5 years. Not just a full team but I believe we have potential point scores at every weight class. We will be led by a very good trio of seniors who will also be my captains this season. These three have put in so much hard work in the past 4 years and I really think it will shine through for them this season. They are Adam Haunhorst, Logan and Logan. My junior class is also very talented with 4 returning letter winners in Will, Aaron, Brett and Luke, all four of these guys have the potential to go deep into the post season this year, three of them have district experience and the fourth was a alternate last year. My Sophmore group will be led by Austin Martin, he has put in so much work in the last year, it I am expecting a huge break out season for him. Also we have back letter winner Nate Schroeder.

Newcomers to watch: Devon Wulff (fr), James Prescott (soph), Brandon Sailer (soph), Roy Barton (fr), Spencer Sunderland (sr).
Coaches outlook: We have a strong core of wrestlers from last season, the problem will be to try to get them all in the lineup. The competition they bring to the practice room will make them all stronger. We lack numbers in the lower and upper weights which will hurt us in dual meets. We look forward to a successful season with goals to make a strong run towards state. The GMC will be very competitive this year. Ayersville and Edgerton return as the defending co-champs and they bring back most of their teams from last year. Wayne Trace didn’t lose anybody and brings in a strong freshman class. Tinora and Fairview will have some very talented wrestlers as well. Last year’s team race was very close, this year’s tourney will be even closer.

Coaches outlook: There is no dobut that this is the youngest and most nexperienced team I have ever coached. We do have a handful of returning letterwinners and guys with district experience that we will rely on heavily for leadership and big wins. It just may take some time for us to compete on the level we would like. The biggest change for us this year is that we will begin wrestling towards the NLL championship on December 15. Louis Vuitton UK as steered by Marc Jacobs remains more firmly committed than ever to a ladylike posture, showing a collection of Spring 2012 Louis Vuitton Bags that exuded proper society girl. Though unlike the more devious-feeling Autumn 2012 presentation, this time the prissy viewpoint of the bags was further supported by a backdrop of fashion that included Southern-belle-lunch-worthy skirts and dresses, classic mule silhouettes and even parasols (not to mention a carousel upon whose horses the girls sat side saddle)! The only naughtiness that could be seen for miles was a Louis Vuitton flask….meant to be hidden in an LV bag no doubt, perfect for getting one through life’s little dark moments–though sipped discretely of course! Via Style.

Ken Griffey Jr. could return to the Mariners lineup today.

Griffey took batting practice Wednesday and had an MRI done on his swollen knee earlier this week. He hasn't played in nearly a week, but his knee is feeling better. He is expected back in the lineup during the series in Oakland.

Wednesday, tiger shoes Griffey and some other Mariners players got a look at a new batting helmet that's been manufactured and approved for use. The Rawlings S110 is designed to cushion the blow of a fastball, supposedly up to 100 mph. But it also makes the helmet heavier, something some major-leaguers have expressed reservations about.

Griffey wasn't impressed. "It looks like a motorcycle helmet," he quipped. Manager Don Wakamatsu called it the "Gazoo" helmet — a reference to a "Flintstones" TV character who wears a huge green helmet.

Notes

? Jose Lopez played at first base Wednesday against the Angels.asics tiger shoes Wakamatsu wanted the most right-handed lineup possible.

? Brandon Morrow is having some issues with forearm tightness down at Class AAA Tacoma. He's due to start on Sunday, asics tiger but the plan is first to have him throw a bullpen session before Friday. If all goes well, he'll be on the mound Sunday.

? Wakamatsu said Carlos Silva felt very good during his 23-pitch outing for Class A Everett Tuesday night. Silva struck out the side, but also allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits. The team will try to get him in a game for an inning or two for Tacoma today.

Endy Chavez thinks about the play every day. For nearly three years, he's been revisiting the moment of his life, grinning all the while, wondering anew the same thing.

Just how'd he catch that ball?

"Every day, and it's still amazing," Chavez says. "I still remember it like it was yesterday."

Chavez, who was traded from the New York Mets to the Mariners in the massive J.J. Putz deal, is referring to how he robbed St. Louis third baseman Scott Rolen during Game 7 of the 2006 National League Championship Series. He leaped onto the left-field wall, stretched his arm as high as it could go, made an improbable snag, and for extra sweetening, he doubled up Jim Edmonds to end the inning.

Not bad for a nondescript Venezuelan outfielder who has never managed to hold onto a starting job.

"I never thought I was going to get it," Chavez said of the catch. "I just decided to hustle, do whatever I could, jump and try to reach it. I was thinking there was a 90 percent chance I wouldn't reach it. I just jumped. I never saw the ball. And then the ball was inside my glove. Everything happened so fast. I saw it on replay, and I was like, 'Wow.' "

That's about as much fame as he can muster, which is interesting because now Chavez will compete with the most spectacular defensive outfielder of the past 25 years for a starting spot in left field.

The catch is that Ken Griffey Jr. isn't the fence-leaping, wrist-breaking highlight waiting to happen on defense anymore. So as Griffey transitioned from headline to player Sunday, the question of where he best fits remained.

There are two primary options: left field or designated hitter. At 39, Junior would do his body good to be a DH mostly, and the Mariners seem to be leaning in that direction. But Griffey has never been a full-time DH, and as a 10-time Gold Glove winner, he still takes pride in playing the entire game.

Ultimately, Chavez could be the one who determines this dilemma. If he can perform consistently, especially at the plate, you'll be relegated to seeing Junior for four at-bats a game.

It's an intriguing competition, although No. 24 will be playing regardless. Just don't expect Chavez to make too much of the battle.

"I'm not seeing that part of it," said Chavez, who expects to leave camp soon to play for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. "I know for sure I'm going to get a lot of information from him. I'm not going to fight him for one position because we're both on the same team."

Growing up in Venezuela, Chavez, 31, idolized Griffey. He didn't get to see Mariners games on TV, but he saw plenty of Griffey highlights. He liked everything about the Kid: the way he fielded, the way he hit, the flair he displayed.

Now, Chavez is better in the field than the aging icon, and possibly he's the key to a healthy reunion for Junior. The less pounding Griffey puts on his surgically repaired left knee, the more likely he is to thrive this season.

The Mariners want to become a better defensive team after last season's failings. In the outfield, a potential speedy trio of Chavez in left, Franklin Gutierrez in center and Ichiro in right has them believing that fewer fly balls will hit the grass. For this to happen, Chavez has the most work to do.

Over eight major-league seasons, he has managed an on-base percentage of only .311 and a slugging percentage of .369. As much as the Mariners want to be defensive-oriented, they need some offensive firepower in the outfield, and in left, they're charged with trying to replace Raul Ibanez's bat.

Perhaps they'll go with a combination of Chavez, Griffey and Wladimir Balentien out there. But Balentien struggled heavily last season and has yet to report to camp because of visa issues. In all likelihood, the best fit is Chavez with some Griffey cameos.

"As long as I get a chance to play, I'm fine with it," Chavez said. "I'm comfortable here. My goal is to be consistent, especially on offense. I'm going to work at it and try to prove myself."

If he does, he'll be able to put more than the catch on his memory mantle.

When I was in Peoria recently, Ken Griffey Jr. told me the story of his former Reds' teammate, Aaron Harang, to illustrate what he perceives as the utter meaningless of mid-spring results.

"One day, I watched Aaron Harang get his ass handed to him. But I also watched what he was doing. He threw a fastball up and away, curve up and away, slider. He threw all his pitches up and away. Then he went to the inside part of the plate, then he went down. He worked the corners. He didn't care about his ERA and what they were doing. That wasn't what he was worried about. We may have felt like that, because we were chasing the balls they were blasting.

"I asked him, 'What were you thinking, what was going on?' He said, 'I was just working spots.' I said, 'What do you mean?' He said, 'Think about what I did to such and such.' Then I started going through all the batters and what he was doing, and I said, 'Never mind,' and walked away."

The upshot is that Harang went on that year to 16-11 and lead the National League in strikeouts (216) and complete games (six). That leads into Professor Griffey's main point about spring stats being particularly unrevealing -- not exactly groundbreaking, but meaningful coming from someone who has been in 20-plus spring trainings. Jamie Moyer was another one who would use early spring games to work on certain pitches, often getting blasted in the process. But by the end of camp, he would be sharp and ready to go.

More from Griffey on the topic, speaking about eight days ago:

"At some point in spring, you just don't play well, and then you get that second wind. At some point, everybody is going to play bad. Then all of a sudden, it's close to the end of spring training, and you say, 'All right, let's go.' "

Perhaps that moment has come for Griffey, who had two doubles in Tuesday's game. That raised his Cactus League average to .240 -- not that spring batting average or team record has any bearing whatsoever, he said.

"It doesn't. Because it's not about spring. Everyone says, 'Oh, they've lost all their games, they're going to be terrible.' No. They could be working on things. It ain't about ERA, it ain't about batting average. It's not about any of that stuff that people look at. It's about getting your work in for the season.

"You could be working on something in here and try to apply it in the game, but people at the game say, 'You suck. Your batting average is this. You're not hitting the ball. You're not driving the ball.' No. You're trying to make a slight adjustment, improve yourself. If you're trying to make a ballclub, it's a little different. But when you've established yourself and have a track record, that's how you do it."

It's always fascinating to watch the veterans step up their game in the final days of spring training -- at about the same time that the early-camp phenoms often start to fade. It's just about that time.

Mariners officials downplayed a USA Today story on Tuesday that suggested Ken Griffey Jr. could join the team shortly.

Mariners president Chuck Armstrong was quoted in the story saying: "I think everybody in Seattle would like to see him retire in a Mariners uniform. He was born a Mariner and I'd like to see him finish up as a Mariner."

The story goes on to say that Griffey could be traded by the Cincinnati Reds, rapidly falling out of the playoff hunt in the National League Central, after he hits three more home runs to reach 600 for his career. It speculated that Seattle would be a logical destination, given its hitting woes and previous relationship with Griffey.

Armstrong was attending an owners meeting and could not be reached. But Armstrong did relay information through the team's media-relations director, Tim Hevly, stating categorically that he was not referring in the interview to any pending acquisition of the onetime Mariners superstar from the Cincinnati Reds.

Instead, his words were meant to be taken in a broad context, Hevly said, suggesting he could envision Griffey joining the team at some point as a free agent, even if only for a day so he could retire in a Seattle uniform.

Implying anything else could be construed as tampering by a sport that has levied heavy fines in the past to teams that speak openly about acquiring players still with another club.

Hevly said Armstrong was talking to the newspaper about Buzzie Bavasi, the longtime Dodgers executive and father of Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi, who died last week at age 93. It was only later on, he said, that Armstrong was asked questions about Griffey and was quick to say he couldn't comment other than generally.

A quote in the story, attributed to Armstrong, has him saying: "I can't say much because he is property of the Cincinnati Reds, but he will always have a special place in my heart and everyone here in Seattle."

Hevly said he did not know whether major-league baseball officials had contacted the team Tuesday about the story or tampering rules.

Mariners manager John McLaren was asked about Griffey before Tuesday night's game against Texas.

"Kenny's always been one of my favorites of the 1990s," he said. "I can't comment on it because he's somebody else's property."

McLaren went on to say: "I'm very anxious for when he gets his 600th home run. That's an accomplishment."

Washburn's calf OK

Jarrod Washburn was still sore on Tuesday but said his calf muscle felt as good as he'd hoped and that he'd make his next start. Washburn felt the muscle "pop" late in his win Monday night. It was the same calf he'd torn to end his 2006 season two weeks early.

But there's apparently a big difference between the two injuries.

"The last time I did it, there was a big hole in there," he said, adding that he could stick his finger through the hole in the muscle by pressing on it.

The hole is smaller this time and Washburn said a team doctor who examined him before Tuesday's game told him scar tissue had torn away from the spot of his previous injury.

There was also a ligament in the calf muscle area that might have torn and caused the popping sensation.

"It's one of those ligaments you really don't need, so it shouldn't be an issue," he said. "I'm going to pitch."

Mariners manager John McLaren said after the game that he'd spoken to Washburn about his situation and is fairly confident the lefty will take the mound again on Saturday.

Balentien's popularity

Mariners right fielder Wladimir Balentien says he's been getting lots of airtime on radio and television, not to mention newspaper write-ups, in his native Curacao since being called up by the team last week. His family back home on the Caribbean island has given him regular updates.

"They tell me a lot of people have been talking about it down there," said Balentien, who hit his second three-run homer in less than a week on Monday night.

Balentien's family is planning a visit, but not until June or July.

"They need to get their vacation time first," said Balentien, whose mother works at a postal substation.
