1/26/2010 10:35 PM  Well the Conference Championships are over and the game we’ve all been waiting for is on the horizon. So without further ado lets jump right into a discussion on the most anticipated game of the NFL calendar…. The PRO BOWL!I know what’s going through your head and you’re right. You’re thinking “You can’t be serious, that’s the most useless All Star game in sports!” I agree 110%. The Pro Bowl Is the most useless all-star game in sports. First of all you aren’t getting the best the NFL has to offer no matter what the league wants you to believe. With respect to Matt Schaub (Houston Texans QB), who I love by the way, considering he saved my fantasy team this year from total worthlessness, but when the only reason you’re an All-Pro is because the starter is playing in the Super Bowl (Peyton Manning - Ind) and therefore can’t participate and the second and third guys (Philip Rivers - SD, Tom Brady - NE) had to pull out due to injury and then the first alternate also has to bypass the game due to injury (Findlay’s own Ben Roethlisberger - Pittsburgh). So basically we’ve got four guys who are called Pro Bowlers, and that’s just the AFC quarterbacks. The game used to be in Hawaii, which the NFL used as a “prize” for the players, but in recent years a trip to Hawaii just didn’t thrill 15 million dollar a year superstars who could book that trip at expedia.com. To most of these guys a trip to Hawaii is like a long weekend. The biggest problem was also the lack of fan support. Tourists weren’t flocking to Hawaii just to see a Pro Bowl and the stadium was routinely half empty, so the NFL decided to move it to the site of the Super Bowl and starting this year play it the week before. Positive changes? It seems more like a vague attempted to put a band aid on gunshot wound. It seems the league is hoping for fans to partake in the Pro Bowl and then stay for Super Bowl festivities. Then there is my biggest problem with the Pro Bowl. The actual game. Football is a hard hitting and physical game. I don’t blame Favre, Harvin, Brady or anyone else with any kind of slight ailment to decline the invitation to play. The problem with that is we’re not seeing our “Pro Bowlers” we are just seeing the best who “Want” to play. Now I know your asking yourself what can we do about it? It’s just the way it is. Since giving into that would be no fun whatsoever, and would bring my blog to an abrupt and unsatisfying conclusion I’m going to share a few ideas that I’ve heard to change up the game. 1. Like I said, football is a hard hitting and violent game and adding another “exhibition” game to the schedule with absolutely no meaning whatsoever is going to make the superstars coming running down from their mansions to participate. Plus this year you lose all the players who are participating in the Super Bowl the next week. So here’s an alternative a co-worker of mine proposed. Move the date of the game! Let’s put the Pro Bowl in the middle of the season, just like all other sports. If you play the game at the mid way point you won’t lose as many players to injuries because they won’t have endured as many weeks of games. Another bonus of this plan would be too play it at mid year, leaving an open week before and after the game and thus doing away with bye weeks. Every team would actually get three weeks (except the Pro Bowlers of course) to recoup from early season injuries. The game would get some good hype because people would need something doing the down time. The bad side of this argument is the same as the current arrangement. The is just no reason to play. No reason to risk serious injury for the remainder of the year. The first time Peyton Manning goes down to a serious injury because some contending NFC defender “rolls” up his leg will start the protests of the mid fall classic. Since most contract bonuses are paid out by being “Named” a Pro Bowler and not exactly playing in the game, and since most stars really don’t need the money anyway there is going to have to be a better incentive to go out there and risk those injuries. That brings us to my other proposition, again brought up by a fellow co-worker. 2. Scrap the Pro Bowl GAME and go for more of a festivities style TV friendly skills competition. When I heard this one my mind immediately went to ESPN covered 3 hour extravaganza highlighted by the NFL’s fastest man 40 yard dash contest. I can just see Chris Johnson (Titans RB) lining up against the likes of Reggie Bush (Saints) and Steve Smith (Panthers). In pads no less, cause why would you run a race with football players without pads, it proves nothing. Imagine having the top quarterbacks lined up chucking the ball as far as they can, just to see who can throw it the farthest. Might even be a competition Michael Vick could win. Or having those quarterbacks lining up and hitting moving targets for accuracy. Running backs and receivers going through an obstacle course or maybe a 40 yard dash for anyone over 300 pounds. Basically all those little drills you could do in the Madden video games could come to life. This proposal would be more like slam dunk contest meets Homerun Derby, but would probably pull better ratings than the Pro Bowl and would give players a reason to come out, especially if you offered cash prizes to the winners. Players could still be selected and honored and then compete in the events without too much risk of injury. The downside to this idea would be the obvious lack of a game. Which the NFL would find very very hard to pass up. And finally one final idea to throw out. 3. Just scratch the tackle football version and play a flag football or 2 hand touch game. Come on we all know that as they add more and more rules protecting quarterbacks, the tackle game we know and love is going by the wayside anyway. Might as well use the all-star game to showcase how it’s going to be if they keep coddling the players anyway. Well there you have it. Re: The Game of the Year! You're right; no one wants to risk mid-season injury for a game that means less than the exhibition season. The skills contest makes the most sense but open it up to some other non-football skills for even more fun. Have a softball game, a basketball game, some golfing, swimming and boating. Can you imagine some offensive linemen in a canoe race?
Above all else, make it FAN FRIENDLY. Autographs & photo ops should be the norm and not the exception.
