It’s Raining in Miami!

 

Well you know it’s a slow sports week when that’s the lead NFL story. Thankfully for us sports crazed fans we have this little ole game coming up Sunday.

Rain or no rain, this Sunday the Colts are bringing their Air Assault to Miami to take on New Orleans and their Ragin’ Cajun fireworks show. So in the interest of giving an out and out prediction, like so many others, I’d like to throw out 4 people who could have a huge impact on Sunday’s game. Everyone knows Manning and Wayne, Brees and Colston. We’ve all read the stories of Freeney and Mathis doing damage to so many opposing quarterbacks. We all know who Reggie Bush is, whether it be from his semi-pro days at USC or because of his celebrity girlfriend, but there are 4 other players who are primed to make a huge impact on Sunday’s game, without the big name recognition of some of their teammates.

1. JEFF SATURDAY - Center - Indianapolis - #63

We’ve all seen Manning run through what seems like 20 play calls while at the Line of Scrimmage. He audibles more times than Carrie Underwood changes dresses at an awards show. But have you ever wondered why those audibles are always going off flawlessly even though it seems like players are just looking at each other with glazed over eyes? Jeff Saturday! He’s the guy who is making sure Manning’s protectors are in the right positions. If he doesn’t adjust the offensive line calls to the right play the only thing Peyton is seeing are the stadium lights from his backside. Peyton was sacked 10 times all year and if the Saints hope to have any chance of winning they are going to have to get pressure on Manning. As long as Saturday keeps the Saints off his quarterback, he’ll be standing victorious on Sunday.

2. JACOB LACEY - Cornerback - Indianapolis - #27

Lacey, a rookie out of Oklahoma State, has gathered a good amount of playing time this year in place of injured starters, Kelvin Hayden and Jerraud Powers. Powers who is nursing an injury and did not play in the AFC Championship game should be ready for the Super Bowl but if not that could thrust Lacey into a starters role, with the assignment of trying to slow down Devery Henderson. If Powers plays then Lacey can slid into the nickel back slot where he’ll cover Robert Meachem or David Thomas. Brees will know where the rookie is at all times and make a concerted effort to exploit his lack of experience if he can. Lacey’s had a good season ending with 85 tackles and 3 interceptions including one he returned for a touchdown. If Powers can play and take some of the pressure off of Lacey and the Colt’s defensive line can pressure Brees’ then look for the Colts to run away from the Saints in a hurry.

3. PIERRE THOMAS - Running Back - New Orleans - #23

Everyone’s heard of Reggie Bush, but what many people don’t realize is while Bush is a New Orleans running back, Pierre Thomas is the STARTING Running back for the Saints. He had 793 yards and 6 TD’s this year and if the Saints have any hopes of keeping the Colts offense on the sidelines then they are going to need Thomas to have a productive day. He’s going to have to move the chains and keep the Saints out of third and long. If Thomas is running through and around the Colts on Sunday then the Saints will really be able to keep the Colt’s defense off balance and keep the Colt Offense on the sidelines, which may be the only way to stop Manning and Co.

 

4. SEDRICK ELLIS - Defensive Tackle - New Orleans - #98

 

This USC product may have the most daunting task of the evening: Trying to collapse the pocket and force Peyton Manning to make quick decisions and hurried throws. If Ellis can take up multiple blockers on run plays, allowing the Saints’ linebackers to have clean lines to the running backs, and also provide a little pressure on Manning so the Saints’ won’t have to depend on the blitz. It’ll be a tough assignment but it’ll be great match up to watch as he takes on Jeff Saturday. If Ellis is dominating, Indianapolis will find it very difficult to get their last place running game going and will be staring down the barrel of third and long’s all day. Advantage Saints.

Well there you have it. Four names you may not have heard of before this week but could very well decide the biggest game of the NFL season this Sunday.

Two keys to the game, #1 - the health of Dwight Freeney. The Colts defense relies on pressure from their front four, especially the ends, Mathis and Freeney. If Freeney is out or severely hampered, the Colts may have to bring extra guys to pressure Brees, and the Saints have the advantage
#2 - Red zone efficiency. This will be a 42-35 type game, the team that can hold the other to field goals will win. It's important for both teams to score touchdowns in the red zone.
Saints 38, Colts 35.
