2/20/2010 12:57 AM  Welcome back SportsBuzz Nation. I have to admit early February’s a tough sports time for me. No baseball (unless you’re an avid follower of Tim Lincecum’s arbitration or Johnny Damon’s potential suitors), no football (unless you’re watching Sportscenter hoping to find one of Mel Kiper’s hairs out of place) and no real college basketball excitement yet. But fear not dear readers, with the exit of early February comes the arrival of the beloved mid to end of February. You know the time where everything comes together for the avid sports fan. The point of the year where no matter how many of Little Caesars $5 Hot and Ready Pizza’s you have you still won’t be able to keep up. It starts with the Daytona 500, runs into the most beloved ritual of spring: Spring Training, rounds the corner into Spring football (yes, there is a college out there that is already out on the practice field) and then comes down the straightaway and into March Madness. Oh and there’s that little set of events that some folks like to call the Olympics. In this edition of the Fan’s Interference I’m going to run down some recent news you might or might not have heard about within the last week or so, -NASCAR Racing’s biggest race of the year kicked off the Nascar season on February 14th in Daytona. Jamie McMurray crossed the line first, but the real moment came with 2 laps to go when Dale Jr. exploded through the field, rampaging from tenth all the way to second. After the kind of year Junior Nation endured last year, it was nice to see vintage Junior show his face. • Happy moment number 2 -- watching Jeff Gordon stroll across the line 26th. • Now how about this Danica character? -NCAA Football How about this one, as of February 15th College Football’s Spring practice has already started. That’s right barely a month and a half after the BCS Championship, none other than the Duke Blue Devils are already on the practice field. Rumor has it the Blue Devil basketball team has already been out to help toughen up the D. • On a geographically closer note, all you Buckeye fans will have to hold out til April to see if Coach Tressel has switched to a Cardigan and whether famed College Football Hall of Famer and Two-time Heisman winner Archie Griffin’s son Adam will be able to walk in the hallowed footsteps that dad established. Michigan fans will begin to get glimpses of whether an actual defense will show up this year starting March 14th. And just for anyone who might be wondering, Bowling Green starts March 19th, while Toledo heads to the field two days earlier. You just have to love Spring football, it’s one of those few times of the year where you’re allowed to, you know, Practice -- as long as you don’t overdo it or upset some 20 year old kid who then transfers and complains to some reporter about having to actually have a work ethic. (Sorry I really have to let that go some day) -BASEBALL The start of Spring Training this week brings back the sounds of the game: the crack of the bat; the thumping of a good fastball hitting that catcher’s mitt, the slow pull of the needle after shooting up the….oh wait, the good commissioner took care of that. • This year the start of a new season did bring about an end to a great career. Chicago White Sox superstar Frank Thomas announced his retirement on February 11th. The Big Hurt finished his career with a .301 batting average, hit 521 homeruns and drove in 1,701 runs. In his 16 seasons he would win back to back MVP awards in 1993 and 1994 and seemed to make it a personal quest to torment both the Indians and Tigers on what seemed like a daily basis. He could be in what might be one of the best Hall of Fame classes in memory, he could quite possibly be inducted into the Hall of Fame with other such other candidates as Tom Glavine, Greg Maddoux and Mike Mussina in 2014. • Speaking of Cleveland, there is apparently no truth to any rumors that they are looking to sign Greg Swindell, Bud Black and Tom Candiotti to help bolster the starting rotation. • In Detroit, fans are hoping that the biggest problem their team is going to have is whether or not manager Jim Leyland will get back to the dugout in time to make a pitching change after his smoke break. Also still out there in Tigerland is an offer awaiting Johnny Damon’s signature. No word yet on the Tigers proposed rule change to add a fourth outfielder to help Damon get the ball back to the infield. • Right now down in Cincinnati, manager Dusty Baker is contemplating on his Opening Day starter. It’s down to Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo. Normally I’d try to add a nice little one-liner in here, but it’s the Reds, haven’t they been through enough. -NBA Last week the NBA held their All-Star Weekend in Dallas, where almost 108,000 people crammed into Cowboys Stadium to watch the All-Star game. 108,000 people to watch a basketball game? My guess is there are still 107,000 of them looking for some defense. Well as you can see, the time to be a sports fan is perfect. Baseball, College football, Nascar and basketball. So when you switch the channel to Sportscenter, go ahead and settle in with some pizza, pizza and get ready for some…….. TIGER WOODS! (Sorry everyone, I tried my best to avoid mentioning him, but I have failed. Of course if I hadn't than you would have just heard about it on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, the Golf Channel, CNBC, FoxSports, Sportsohio, BET, Lifetime and the Cartoon Network) Anyway that’s another story for another time. Oh well, they have not won in awhile, but then again, we could write pages about what's wrong with baseball and making a level playing field for ALL the teams, not just a few. Works for the NFL and the NBA. I have to side with jimmyz, NASCAR and auto racing a sport? Not in my world.
As for the timing? I don't know how a perfect time in the sports year cannot include the NFL, the most popular of the professional sports. And it's not even close anymore. I actually like early November better. The world series just wrapped up, the NFL is about 6-8 weeks into the season, NBA is just getting started. Not a real big college football fan, again, too much controlled by a handful of schools, plus, let's face it... student athletes?
