District Wrestling Roundup: Three FHS semifinalists at Mentor

MENTOR — At the district wrestling tournament winning tight matches is a must if you want to extend your season.
Findlay High School’s Dru Hernandez is almost there.
Hernandez was one of three Trojans to go unbeaten on the first day of the Division I district wrestling tournament at Mentor.
The top four wrestlers advance to next week’s OHSAA state tournament at Value City Arena.
Hernandez, a junior 160-pounder, opened with a 4-2 win over Mentor’s Sam Arcaro and scored an 8-5 overtime win over Three Rivers Athletic Conference rival Troy Murphy to advance to today’s 12 noon semifinal round. He’ll take a 24-14 record against Lakewood St. Edward’s Michael Carpenter.
Joey Staschiak (132) and Zach Bryant (182) also advanced for the Trojans.
Staschiak, a four-time district qualifier with a 36-8 record, picked up career win No. 97 with a 10-5 victory over Ashtabula Lakeside’s Mike DeCamillo and win No. 98 by doubling up Avon’s Tommy Sear 8-4 in the quarterfinals. He’ll take on three-time state placer and 2015 state champ Allan Hart of St. Edward in the semifinals.
Bryant (30-12) also knocked off a Clay wrestler on his way to the semis. The FHS junior pinned Cleveland JFK’s Keishawn Goodwin in 48 seconds to open the tournament and stopped Clay’s Hunter McNutt 7-3 in the next round. He’ll take on St. Edward senior Tyler Stepic in his semifinal bout.
Seth Douglas (145) and Aaron Kupferberg (220) won openers but lost in the quarterfinals. They’ll compete in today’s 10 a.m. consolation round along with five other FHS wrestlers still alive in the tournament.
St. Edward leads the tournament with a 145½-101½ edge over Elyria. Findlay is ninth in the 42-team field with 29 points.
Pair of Rams in semis
MANSFIELD — Upper Sandusky’s Noah Clary recorded a pair of pins and teammate Noah Frey also advanced to today’s semifinals in Friday’s Division II district tournament at Mansfield Senior.
Clary, a junior returning state qualifier, improved to 41-2 by pinning Parma Padua’s Matt Abrahamin 5:31 and Lima Bath’s Isaac Ingram in 1:32. Up next in the 160-pound semis, he’ll face Norwalk’s Ethan Hernandez.
Frey also put together a pair of solid performances 182 pounds. He knocked off Rocky River’s Jacob Adams 7-0 and pinned St. Marys Memorial’s Tyler Miller in 2:33.
His next match will be against Bay Village Bay’s Matthew Cover.
Fostoria’s Colin Drake dropped a 6-2 decision to Cloverleaf’s Cory Stallings and will compete in today’s consolations at 160 pounds.
Wauseon leads the 42-team event with an 881/2-49 margin over Ashland. Upper Sandusky is tied for 10th place with Tiffin Columbian with 25 points.
