Men’s Basketball: Season begins at Hall of Fame Classic

The University of Findlay men’s basketball team isn’t easing itself into the 2017-18 season.
Instead, the Oilers open with two quality opponents in the Small College Hall of Fame Classic on Nov. 3-4 in Evansville, Ind. as they released their schedule for the upcoming season Tuesday.
Findlay, fresh off a 25-7 season and Sweet 16 run, was invited to the two-day, eight-team event at the Ford Center with some of Division II’s best teams.
The Oilers open with a Friday contest against Indiana University-Pennsylvania (28-4), which won an NCAA tournament game before falling to eventual runner-up Fairmont State in the next round.
UF’s Saturday opponent is St. Thomas Aquinas (New York) — East regional champion which fell to national champion Northwest Missouri State in the Elite Eight.
Both games are at 2:30 p.m.
The event is in its second year, expanding from six teams last season. Other participating teams include Ferris State, Southern Indiana, Augustana, Kentucky Wesleyan and Montevallo.
Findlay gets the next 11 days off before Fairmont State comes to town (Nov. 15).
The Fighting Falcons topped the Oilers 96-80 at home in the third game of the season en route to starting 21-0.
Three of UF’s next four nonconference games are against former Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference members.
The Oilers face Lake Superior State (Nov. 17) in Cedarville’s Don Callan Classic and travel to Ferris State (Nov. 25) and Northwood (Nov 27) with Great Midwest Athletic Conference play on the horizon.
Findlay’s first GMAC game is a big one as two-time defending conference champion Kentucky Wesleyan welcomes the Oilers for a tussle in Owensboro, Ky.
The Oilers finally return to Croy Gymnasium in hosting fellow new GMAC member Walsh (Dec. 7) for what is just their second home game in their first 10 contests.
Findlay has 20 league games in all, playing each team but Walsh and Alderson Broaddus twice.
NAIA school Goshen College (Indiana) comes to town over Christmas break (Dec. 28), serving as a tuneup before the Oilers resume GMAC play two days later.
