Prep Gymnastics: Pruitt, Findlay shooting for another TRAC title

TOLEDO — Cassidy Pruitt will be going for her second straight all-around title and Findlay High for its fifth straight team championship when the 2017 Three Rivers Athletic Conference gymnastics meet is held Friday at the Exceleration Gymnastics Center in Toledo.
Findlay High coach Traci Dunn expects the team competition to come down to a battle between the Trojans and Toledo Notre Dame. Notre Dame has never won a league gymnastics title, but has been TRAC runner-up three times in the past four years, including last year.
“They were pretty strong last year, and I think they graduated just one gymnast,” Dunn said.
Findlay and Notre Dame have squared off twice this season. Findlay finished ahead of the Eagles in the Beauty and the Beast event held at Findlay High in December.
Notre Dame (128.10) finished second and Findlay third (172.1) in a three-team event held at Patrick Henry last Friday.
With just four gymnasts available, Dunn knew her Trojans were at a bit of a disadvantage in Friday’s triangular at Patrick Henry.
“We had four kids competing, so we could not drop our lowest scores,” Dunn said. ”
“Bringing a fifth gymnast (Friday) will help make a difference in the numbers.”
Findlay has won the TRAC gymnastics title the last four years. But the Trojans’ margin of victory, a staggering 10 points in 2015 and 11 in 2013, dropped to under 4.0 a year ago.
Pruitt and Kathryn Gerschutz are the returning TRAC veterans for Findlay. Pruitt, a senior and three-time state qualifier, won the vault and bars events en route to being named 2016 TRAC Gymnast of the Year. Gerschutz is a sophomore who made the all-Northwest District team last season.
Juniors Vashti Lawson and Macie Hunt and freshman Kaitlyn Hardwick complete Findlay’s lineup.
The TRAC tournament triggers a season-ending rush for Findlay, with the district meet being next week and the state tournament on March 3.
