Women’s Basketball: Hintz, Englebrecht go off as Oilers rout OVU

Lynsey Englebrecht and Anna Hintz each did a lot of scoring in a short amount of time Thursday night.
The duo combined for the University of Findlay women’s basketball team’s first 17 points on the night and 31 in the first half.
Englebrecht finished with a career-high 29 points and Hintz totaled 25 points as the Oilers rolled over Ohio Valley 96-56 for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference win at Croy Gymnasium.
“Lynsey played 24 minutes and Anna played 22,” UF coach Jim Wiedie said. “We just thought, because Ohio Valley is so short-handed, and I feel for the kids and the coaches, it’s tough to battle with the number of players they have.”
Only six players took the court for the Fighting Scots (0-23, 0-19), the only winless women’s team in Division II.
The Oilers (19-6, 16-5 GMAC) are one game behind Ursuline (18-7, 15-4) and Cedarville (20-5, 15-4) for the league lead. Cedarville pummeled Ursuline 82-54 on Thursday.
Englebrecht and Hintz got it done in a polar opposite of ways.
Englebrecht, who also dished out six assists, did most of her damage beyond the arc.
She tied her own school-record single-game mark with eight 3-pointers set earlier this season on Dec. 30 at Davis & Elkins. She also surpassed 200 career makes (207), good for third all-time at UF.
“I just try to keep my head on straight, take open shots and look for open players,” Englebrecht said.
Englebrecht sank four 3-balls in the first quarter as UF led 22-11.
She drained her eighth with 30 seconds left in the third quarter to put the Oilers up 70-40 entering the final frame.
Her teammates on the bench let her know her total afterwards but she wasn’t thinking about making No. 9.
“I was just trying to shoot it,” Englebrecht said. “It doesn’t bother me. I try not to think about the numbers.”
Meanwhile, the 6-foot-2 Hintz dominated the post, making 11 of 13 shots
She grabbed 12 rebounds of UF’s 51 rebounds to complete the double-double, her eighth of the year and third straight.
It has been a big week for Hintz, who scored 29 points Tuesday in UF’s 73-65 win over Cedarville.
“We felt Annie could score at will, especially coming off the monster game against Cedarville,” Wiedie said.
Haley Horstman chipped in 14 points, four rebounds, six assists and four steals for UF.
Fellow senior Kendyl Hinton returned to the court after a two-game absence and dished out five assists in 10 minutes off the bench.
Carey grad and sophomore Shelby Kin scored six points in six minutes, also off the bench.
